The first question everyone asks is the price. The honest answer is that home EV charger installations in this area generally land somewhere between about $1,200 and $5,000, and where your house falls in that range has very little to do with the charger and almost everything to do with your electrical service and the distance to where you park.
Prices here are starting points and they vary by job. Nobody can quote your house accurately without looking at the panel. What we can do is explain exactly what moves the number, so you can tell a fair quote from a guess.
The five things that set the price
- Panel capacity. A healthy 200 amp panel with open slots is the simple case. A full panel, an old panel, or a 100 amp service can mean load management or a service upgrade first.
- Distance from the panel to the car. A charger on the garage wall behind the panel is short work. A run across a finished basement, up an exterior wall, or out to a detached garage is not.
- Whether the run is exposed or through finished space. Fishing through finished walls and ceilings takes time and sometimes patching.
- Charger amperage. A 48 amp unit needs heavier wire and a larger breaker than a 32 amp unit, and it puts more pressure on the service.
- Whether a service upgrade is needed. This is the single biggest swing, and it is why the panel gets checked before anything is quoted.
Why the panel comes first
A Level 2 charger is one of the largest continuous loads a house will ever carry, and it runs for hours. Most Braintree homes were not built with that in mind. Add a heat pump, central air and a finished basement and the arithmetic gets tight fast.
A load calculation is a short step that answers it properly. It tells you whether your existing service supports the charger as is, whether a lower amperage setting or a load management device solves it, or whether the service needs to go to 200 amps. Doing that first is the difference between one clean install and two visits with two invoices.
What you get for the money
A proper install is a dedicated circuit sized for the charger, conduit or cable run cleanly and protected, the unit mounted and commissioned, any panel work completed, and a permit with a town inspection. In Massachusetts this is permitted electrical work, and the inspection is part of doing it right, not an optional extra.
A quote that is dramatically below the rest usually means one of those pieces is missing, most often the permit or the load calculation.
Is a 48 amp charger worth it
For most commuters, no. Overnight charging on a 32 or 40 amp circuit adds far more range than a normal day uses. The larger unit costs more in wire, breaker and sometimes service capacity, and the benefit only shows up if you drive long distances daily or you are turning the car around twice in a day. It is worth asking what your actual daily mileage is before paying for headroom you will not use.
